We were shocked and saddened by news of the sudden death this week of one of Latin America’s inspirational farmer leaders, Raul del Aguila Hidalgo.
As General Manager of COCLA, Peru’s 7,000 strong small farmer organisation, Raul had taken sales of Fairtrade coffee from 2% to over 40% of production. He also represented producers on the board of Fairtrade International for many years. The Foundation offers its heartfelt condolences to Raul’s family, friends and all who worked with him.
Speaking for the Fairtrade Foundation today, Chief Executive Michael Gidney said, ‘Raul was an inspirational leader in Fairtrade, a man with an absolute sense of mission to improve the lives of the smallholder farmers he represented. Our global movement of producers and consumers uniting for fairer trade is his living legacy. This Fairtrade Fortnight, our tribute to Raul is to step up our own campaigning for a better deal for smallholders – keeping the flame of his life’s work burning here in the UK.’
